Importing oud into the USA & EU

Agarwood is a regulated species under CITES — here's what that means for buyers, and how we handle the paperwork.

CITES status: Appendix II, not banned

Agarwood-producing species (Aquilaria and Gyrinops) are listed under Appendix II of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) — this means international trade is regulated and requires permits, but it is not prohibited. This is a common point of confusion for first-time buyers, so we're explicit about it: legally sourced, permitted agarwood oil and chips can be imported into both the USA and the EU.

We prioritise CITES-compliant, cultivated agarwood over wild harvest specifically to keep sourcing sustainable and documentation straightforward for trade buyers.

By region

What each market requires

United States

Commercial shipments require a CITES export permit issued in the country of origin, plus a declaration filed with US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) at the port of entry. Import is legal with correct permits — it is not a banned substance or controlled drug.

We prepare the export-side CITES permit and shipping documentation for every wholesale order; buyers are responsible for their own FWS declaration at entry, which we can guide you through.

European Union

As an EU-domiciled supplier (Tallinn, Estonia), we handle CITES export permitting and can coordinate directly with the importing member state's CITES Management Authority, simplifying the process versus importing from outside the EU.

This is one practical advantage of buying from Al-Dahab Oud versus a non-EU supplier for EU-based trade buyers and collectors.
